DEPARTMENTAL HIGHLIGHTS

Surya Aggarwal (Ph.D. Candidate)
was named one of the 2019 Glen de Vries Graduate Fellows in Biological Sciences.

Alison Barth (Faculty)
was honored with the Maxwell H. and Gloria C. Connan Professorship in the Life Sciences.

Cory Bird (Undergraduate)
was chosen to take part in CMU’s Fifth Year Scholar program to pursue both academic and personal goals while finding ways to enrich the Carnegie Mellon community. He will spend the coming year developing projects to enhance non-traditional learning spaces around campus based on data he collected from students.

Max Cravener (Ph.D. Candidate)
received a Dr. Margaret Carver Departmental Travel Award to attend the 2019 Molecular Mycology course at the University of Chicago Marine Biological Laboratory in Massachusetts.

Hannah Daniel (Undergraduate)
placed first in the poetry category for 2019 CMU Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Writing Awards. Her poem, “They Sat in the Back,” was one of three winning pieces that responded to the tragic Tree of Life shooting.

Jason D,Antonio (Faculty)
was appointed to the American Medical College Application Service Advisory Committee.

Ian Fucci (Ph.D. Candidate)
was awarded the 2019 Department of Biological Sciences Teaching Award recognizing outstanding accomplishments and dedicated service to the department with regards to teaching.

Aryn Gittis (Faculty)
was awarded a grant from The Michael J. Fox Foundation to advance her research on new treatment methods for Parkinson’s disease.

 

Luisa Hiller (Faculty)
was honored with the Eberly Family Career Development Professorship of Biological Science.

Veronica Hinman (Faculty)
was named head of the Department of Biological Sciences and honored with the Dr. Frederick A. Schwertz Distinguished Professorship.

Scott Keith (Ph.D. Candidate)
received a Dr. Margaret Carver Departmental Travel Award to attend the 2019 Animal-Microbe Symbioses Gordon Research Conference in Mount Snow, Vermont.

Sandra Kuhlman (Faculty)
was honored with the Eberly Family Career Development Professorship of Biological Science.

Alyssa Lawler (Ph.D. Candidate)
received a Dr. Margaret Carver Departmental Travel Award to attend the ISMB/ECCB 2019 meeting in Basel, Switzerland.

Sophie Li (Undergraduate)
was named a member of the first cohort of Tartan Scholars at CMU.

Miranda Mlincek (Undergraduate)
was chosen to take part in CMU’s Fifth Year Scholar program to pursue both academic and personal goals while finding ways to enrich the Carnegie Mellon community. She will spend the coming year growing social resources and peer groups around campus.

Karina Mueller Brown (Ph.D. Candidate)
received a Dr. Margaret Carver Departmental Travel Award to attend the 2019 EuroPneumo meeting in Greifswald, Germany.

Lauren Nazzaro (Undergraduate)
received a Carnegie Mellon Women’s Association Scholarship in part for her involvement as a mentor and site leader for elementary-aged girls as part of Carnegie Mellon’s Strong Women Strong Girls chapter.

Ola Owodunni (Undergraduate)
was named a member of the first cohort of Tartan Scholars at CMU.

Teresa Spix (Ph.D. Candidate)
was awarded the 2019 Department of Biological Sciences Leadership Award recognizing outstanding leadership and dedicated service within and outside the department.

Nat Williams (Ph.D. Candidate)
received a Dr. Margaret Carver Departmental Travel Award to attend the 2019 Cognitive Science Society Annual Conference in Montreal, Quebec.

Andrew Wolff (Ph.D. Candidate)
was named one of the 2019 Glen de Vries Graduate Fellows in Biological Sciences.

Eric Yttri (Faculty)
was the recipient of a 2019 seed grant from the Brain Research Foundation. Yttri will use the funding for work on a new project to understand how value guides which behaviors we perform.

Huaiying Zhang (Faculty)
received a New Investigator Award from the Charles E. Kaufman Foundation to support her research on the physics and chemistry of liquid condensation in live cells, which could inform the development of new treatments for cancer.

Leon Zhao (Faculty)
was awarded a Grand Challenges grant through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop technologies pairing a nanoscale imaging technique with virtual reality.
