Each year, high achieving junior and senior student-athletes are recognized at a celebration in December.<\/p>\n<p>Chemistry senior Mason Shockley, a member of the soccer team with a 4.0 GPA who was selected to the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa honorary society, was one of this year\u2019s speakers. He said soccer lifted him up academically.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy college experience wouldn\u2019t have been the same without soccer,\u201d said Shockley, who was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team. \u201cWhen I was struggling in class, soccer was a safe place to go. Doing something you love helps you excel in the classroom. She has created novel structures based on thiophene and furan building blocks, compounds that can be found in pharmaceuticals or roasted coffee beans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe organic materials we make are derived from inexpensive building blocks, and the materials themselves can easily be used to cover surfaces as a thin electroactive film,\u201d Kawakami said. \u201cWe believe they could be good sensors due to their fluorescence, as they emit strongly under the appropriate conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kawakami has spent a large amount of time in her Ph.D. developing new methods to make materials, and through this method development, has constructed unknown molecules and materials.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.edu\/chemistry\/people\/faculty\/noonan.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000080\">Kevin Noonan<\/span><\/a>, associate professor of chemistry, who leads the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chem.cmu.edu\/groups\/noonan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #000080\">Noonan Group<\/span><\/a> that Kawakami is a member of, said that her work is really at the forefront of conjugated polymer and macrocycle synthesis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuilding complicated structures using simple chemistry is always challenging,\u201d Noonan said. \u201cManami\u2019s work shows how to build elegant new structures taking advantage of simple design rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Besides her personal research, Kawakami collaborates with other labs in the <span style=\"color: #000080\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.edu\/chemistry\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color: #000080\">Department of Chemistry<\/a><\/span>, helping with their polymer synthesis as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cManami is persistent, thoughtful and meticulous as a researcher,\u201d Noonan said. \u201cSome of the work she carried out required extreme care, and I was always incredibly impressed with her planning and effort. She is also highly creative and collaborative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Noonan Group collaborates with the <span style=\"color: #000080\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chem.cmu.edu\/groups\/bernlab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color: #000080\">Bernhard<\/a><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #000080\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chem.cmu.edu\/groups\/kowalewski\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color: #000080\">Kowalewski<\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #000080\"><a href=\"https:\/\/groups.chem.cmu.edu\/peteanu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color: #000080\">Peteanu<\/a><\/span> groups on helical polyfurans, a type of polymer that can be made chiral and folds like biological macromolecules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has been the driving force behind those projects succeeding,\u201d said Noonan, who added that Kawakami has co-authored papers with all these groups.<\/p>\n<p>Along with connecting with other labs, Kawakami mentors a junior graduate student and an undergraduate student in the Noonan Group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re good students,\u201d Kawakami said. \u201cWhen they learn something from me, like techniques, and use them, they\u2019re excited that\u2019s working. I\u2019m very happy about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kawakami plans on using the fellowship to focus more on her research.
