The patterns of this undergraduate\u0313s life have taken him from Turkey to Berlin to Pittsburgh, and from a completely separate college to the Department of Mathematical Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>When M\u00fcyesser, a native of Istanbul, entered Carnegie Mellon, he did so as a student in College of Engineering&#8217;s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI realized quickly it wasn&#8217;t for me.\u201d<br \/>\nInstead, through his first-year classes, he found himself drawn to mathematics and particularly a field known as Ramsey Theory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe catchphrase for the field could be \u02bbcomplete chaos is impossible,\u02bc\u201d M\u00fcyesser described. \u201cIt is completely opposed to anything I would have thought of as math from my high school background.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Essentially, Ramsey Theory looks at the conditions that mean &#8220;order&#8221; that must exist in a certain set, whether that be a group of numbers or even a collection of people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a system you&#8217;re looking at is large enough, orderly substructures will form,\u201d M\u00fcyesser said.<br \/>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.14&#8243; parallax=&#8221;off&#8221; parallax_method=&#8221;on&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.14&#8243;]One highlight of M\u00fcyesser&#8217;s undergraduate career at Carnegie Mellon was his time as an International Summer Undergraduate Research Fellow. The program funds roughly two months of full-time research under a faculty member in a foreign country. M\u00fcyesser&#8217;s ISURF grant took him to the Free University of Berlin, where he said he got to meet many well-known mathematicians. \u201cIt was a good simulation of what my graduate school experience will be like,\u201d M\u00fcyesser said.<\/p>\n<p>As a senior, M\u00fcyesser is looking forward to continuing in academia and mathematical research. &#8220;I&#8217;m confident that I will want to do this for a long time,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Along with rock climbing, one of M\u00fcyesser\u0313s favorite extracurricular activities is just walking around the campus and the city, he said. Even then, math is never far from his mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a good way to do homework,\u201d M\u00fcyesser noted of his time walking, in which he can think through equations in his head. \u201cIt\u0313s easier not to get distracted.\u201d<br \/>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row custom_padding=&#8221;0|0px|46px|0px|false|false&#8221;
